Thirty-three percent of renters move every year, and the average American moves 12 times throughout their life. Some of these moves can be well-planned over the course of a month, but often, relocating is an urgent, one-week chaotic affair. Maybe you got a job offer you couldn’t turn down, but the boss needs you by Monday across the country. Or, maybe you closed on your house and need to be out more quickly than you expected. Or, maybe you just hate packing like so many of us and procrastinated the preparations. Whatever the reason, you now have to have all of your belongings packed and in the moving truck as soon as possible. Here are a few tips to help you stay calm and get your crap together quickly:

  1. Consider Some Local Moving Companies

If you just got the news and you now have a week to get moved, consider hiring some professional movers to help. Though you may be someone who takes pride in managing their own projects, with a rapid move, it can save you a ton of time and stress to hire out. Call a few moving companies and ask if they have immediate availability. Moving companies will help pack, organize, haul and deliver. Even if you choose to pack most of your own things, and then use furniture movers for the big stuff, you can expedite the process significantly.

  2. Get Rid of What You Don’t Need

It may seem tempting to just throw everything in boxes to be sorted later, but adding the extra step of discarding what you don’t need will actually save you time in the long run. Keep a trash bin and a donation bin in the room while you pack, so you only bother boxing the important stuff. This method will save room in vehicles, save time loading and unloading, and make unpacking in your new home much easier.

  3. Ask Friends for Help

Time to call in for backup. A quick move is often out of your control, and most friends and family will understand difficult circumstances. Even if you just ask someone to deliver the trash and donation bins to their destinations, or request to borrow a friend’s truck, calling in a favor or two can make your urgent move a little less urgent. Be sure to show your appreciation once the storm has passed with a little note or a thank-you gift.

Moving is exhausting. Moving quickly is downright nightmarish. By taking a minute to get professional and personal help, and cutting back on unnecessary items, you can help speed along your last-minute move.
